Background

• The generic name refers to the Scottish botanist John Boswell (1710-80) and the specific name to the sacred and ritual use of this plant. Together with other species of the genus, it grows wild in the Horn of Africa and southern Arabia. Its principal use now is in the manufacture of incense and pastilles. It is also used in plasters and might be substituted for Balsam of Peru or Balsam or Tolu.
