Background

The Chinese common name for fo-ti, he-shou-wu, was the name of a Tang dynasty man whose infertility was supposedly cured by fo-ti; in addition, his long life was attributed to the tonic properties of this herb. The Chinese say that when the root of the plant is fifty years old, it will keep a man’s hair and mustache from turning gray. At 150 years, the root becomes Hill Uncle. It must be taken for one year for old teeth to fall out and new ones to replace them. At 200 years, the root is known as Hill Father, and if taken for one year, it will “render the face youthful and the stance ebullient.” At 300 years, the root is called Mountain Spirit. By then, it is said to have developed an ethereal substance which comes close to making the taker immortal.
