In Greek mythology the goddess Flora was jealous of her husband’s attentions to the nymph Anemone and so transformed her into the “wind flower” (anemos) at the mercy of the North Wind. The name “pasque flower,” by which the plant is sometimes known, derives from the French name for Easter, when it is often in flower. Both the common name of windflower and the plant’s specific botanical name pulsatilla, meaning pulsing or beating, refer to the waving motion of the plant’s frail stems when a breeze is blowing. In Greek mythology, pasque flower sprung from the ground wet with Aphrodite’s tears as she wept over the wounded Adonis, while homeopaths prescribe the plant for sensitive people who are easily moved to tears.
